Enjoy your bird watching holidays in Pico, one of the best destinations in Europe for birding tours.

DESCRIPTION:
The interest for birds and bird watching in the Azores is rising every year. Many Azoreans discover this which gives their visit outside in the nature an extra dimension. Photographers find birds so exciting that they want to learn more. Visiting bird watchers from all over Europe find the Azorean birdlife so interesting that they come back year after year. There is a constant need for sharing information about birds and bird localities, to learn, to discuss and to gather and make available for all this every-day growing knowledge of Azorean birds.
O Cagarro - at sea the most regularly seen seabird is the Cory’s shearwater (Calonectris diomedea) or ‘Cagarro’ as it is known locally in Pico.
From March to October, every night you can hear a bit for all the islands of the Azores the interesting sound of the return to the colonies Cory's Shearwaters.
It sounds like the croak of a frog or the mewing of a cat. Sometimes you can hear above your head the words like "aqua" - it also them, cagarros. Enigmatic, mysterious, magical, scary...
These nest in their thousands around the island. They only return to shore at night and when they do it is possible to hear their eerie calls virtually anywhere around the coast.Perhaps the most easily seen seabirds on land are the Yellow-legged gulls (Larus michahellis atlantis) and terns (both Common terns Sterna hirundo and Roseate terns Sterna dougallii).
Another azorean birds, the gulls, are year round residents but the terns only come here to breed in the summer.
Location of birding Rocky shoreline north of the lighthouse. Good for Common and Roseate terns in the breeding season. Other locations in areas of Lagoa do Peixinho, Lagoa do Rosada, Lagoa do Ilhéu, Lagoa do Paúl, Lagoa Seca, Lagoa do Caiado, Lagoa do Capitão, Lajes do Pico, Madalena harbour.
