DESCRIPTION:

Faial was the last location of major volcanic activity in the Azores, when Capelinhos erupted (1957-58), adding 1km of land to the island.Today, we can visit the site, it’s interactive museum and marvel at the power of the eruption which engulfed a whole village in 5m of volcanic ash. This area, resembling the surface of the moon, is in stark contrast to the hydrangea-lined lanes of the rest of the island.

We also visit the crater of Monte da Guia above Horta and a climb to the Whaler’s Chapel offer a spectacular view of Faial and Pico. Descending from here to the bay of Porto Pim, a sandy beach and safe blue sea awaits us.

After enjoying the natural beauty of the island of Faial we move to Horta, the fortified main town of Faial, lies facing the imposing cone of Pico in a wide bay on the southeast coast of the island, with a beach of black volcanic sand.

The town is attractively situated on gently rising ground, surrounded by handsome villas and beautiful gardens. Horta, seat of the only municipality in Faial, is one of the liveliest, and most eye-catching town of the Azores. It provides wonderful views of the island of Pico, and sometimes São Jorge.

Every year, from the first to the second Sunday in August, Horta's is home to the week of the sea. The port is full of sailing ships with their colourful sails and flags. The town is dominated by the happy music of bands and groups of stringed instruments.
