DESCRIPTION:

The Azores are teeming with marine life and the dive locations are amongst one of the most interesting and diverse in the world. The lava tunnels and slopes have turned into habitats for typical reef species such as crustaceans, groupers, snappers, moray eels, rays and invertebrates. Each little cave or crack forms a living environment for all sorts of different species.

Night dives offer the possibility to observe millions of shrimp as well as moray eels, nudibranches, lobsters and squid. Diving into the blue creates opportunities to discover schools of barracudas, mackerel, skipjack tuna or bonito and even large schools of trigger fish.

In recent years Sport Pico have explored more than 30 dive sites off the coasts of Pico, Faial and Sao Jorge, which offer exciting dives to both the less experienced as well as the advanced divers. The sheltered bays of Sao Roque and Sao Caetano are ideal for easy, shallow dives that are excellent for junior divers also. The caves and arches of Formesinhas, Cachorro and Calhetta are ideal for orientation dives and cave enthusiasts. Drop offs can be found at various coastal locations. And we also offer a number of boat dives, which either take you to the volcanic crater Ilheus, just outside of Madalena’s harbor or to a location in the middle of the Pico-Faial channel, called Baixa Sul. Stingrays and schools of barracuda are waiting for you here.
Beginner or advanced, young or old, diving around Pico certainly has something to offer for everyone.

OUR TIPS:

Divers, you should bring your own equipment to maximize comfort.

To fully ease your mind, the closest, hyper modern decompression chamber is located in Horta, on the neighboring island of Faial. But we are also well equipped with rental equipment available.
A 7 mm semi-dry wetsuit is advised with water temperatures ranging from 16 to 22°C in summer.
