The Azores archipelago consists of nine islands - Santa Maria, São Miguel, Graciosa, Terceira, São Jorge, Pico, Faial, Flores and Corvo - resulting gradual volcanic activity in the period between Holocene and Miocene sediments.

The oldest of them - Santa Maria - began to take shape already more than 8 million years ago, while the youngest - Pico - emerged from the sea about 250,000 years ago.

The whole archipelago is the de facto highest mountains on the planet, calculates if its height from the seabed.
