Caminho dos Burros: Vertente Norte

DESCRIPTION:

Caminho dos Burros (Donkeys trail) is a walker’s trail that crosses the Island of Pico from the North to the South coast. This stretch begins in the central highlands of the island.
The trail starts out as a beaten earth track, later we walk into a path that leads to Cabeços do Mistério. This area was formed by the eruption that took place in 1562-1564, the longest lasting volcanic eruption since the Azores were settled.
Then we descend on to a narrower path which has denser vegetation of group of the endemic Euphorbia stygiana, large stretches of Sphagnum and Azorean buckthorn (Frangula azorica).
We go through Mistério da Prainha until we come to a path that leads down to Baía de Canas, where there is an old road made of large stones that used to be a route for laden donkeys to travel along.

We stop at natural park, Reservas Florestal do Recreio da Prainha. Here is waiting for us a tasty lunch with tasting of red wines and excellent cheese.

After picnic and short brake, we will continue along dirt lane until we reach the end of our trail to Baía de Canas.

DON'T FORGET:

Do not forget water, confortable and waterproof clothes, hat or cap and mountain boots. Also take along in your rucksack raincoat, sunscreen.

Trekking sticks are good to relieve the mastery of heavier sections.
