Santana - Lajido

Come with us along the coast to the black lava, soak up the smell of the ocean and admire the picturesque area of Pico with talking about the island and its inhabitants and traditions with a stop for homemade lunch.
DESCRIPTION:

This trail begins on the regional road between the villages of Santana and São Vicente and comes to an end in Lajido. We start by going through a narrow path that climbs to the Vigia da Baleia (Whale Observation Post), from where we can enjoy a privileged view over the channel and São Jorge Island. We continue to climb next to the Cabeço de Santana, and then we descend heading to the coast, crossing the regional road and continuing until the Baía do Gasparal.
From this point onwards, the trail continues along the coastal area until Lajido, initially along an old track where heather is the dominant botanical species. At the end of this track, we continue on top of basaltic flat stones near the sea until we reach Lajido.
And here, in the scenic Lajido we enjoy a delicious lunch prepared at home and test the delicious red wine from the nearby vineyards and excellent cheese.
After lunch and short brake, already in the hamlet of Lajido de Santa Luzia, we visit a group of houses and wine cellars built from the basaltic rock that markedly characterises Pico. After passing the houses of Cabrito, we go head to the Ermida de São Mateus. We will continue towards Lajido through the village of Arcos in Santa Luzia, which it is close to the landscape of the Pico Island Vineyard Culture, a UNESCO World Heritage site, then we pass through the tidal pool and walking distance from the ocean, we walk by the sea towards Ponta Negra.
This path starts as a lane lined with Australian cheesewood (Pittosporum undulatum) and Azores heather (Erica azorica) and turns into a shortcut over basaltic rocks.
There is also full view of the Pico mountain and views of Faial and Sao Jorge islands.
At the end of out hike we visit the Núcleo Museológico do Lajido.
