DESCRIPTION:

This trail begins next to the Lagoa do Capitão (Capitão Crater Lake), located in the central plateau in the interior of Pico Island, and ends at the Cais do Pico.

The first part of the trail is covered on a gravel road where we can find, besides other endemic species, some Azores Junipers of great size. We contour the Cabeço do Piquinho to find a wonderful view of the north coast of Pico Island, with the final destination of our walk Cais do Pico standing out. If the visibility is good, the islands of São Jorge and Graciosa also come to view.
It is an almost virgin laurissilva forest and this area is extremely a fragile ecosystem.

We will come across many different forest birds, including the Goldcrest, Europe’s smallest bird, which is easily recognisable by its small yellow spot on top of its head.
After leaving the endemic wood, we may rest in “A Fonte,” a picnic park, where an old tank of drinking water that supplied the Cais do Pico can be found.

There will be waiting us very tasty lunch with tasting of red wine & cheese.
After lunch and short brake we continue through a wider road, and already on the road to the Cais do Pico, we will find on our right the entry to the Canárias cave.

The trail then ends soon after next to the Convento de São Pedro de Alcântara in the village São Roque.

DON'T FORGET:

Do not forget water, confortable and waterproof clothes, hat or cap and mountain boots. Also take along in your rucksack raincoat.

Swimming during the trail: this activity is not included in the program of our tours but there is possibility. In case you want to refresh in one of the natural pools, please mention it in your order.
