DESCRIPTION:

This trail begins at Porto do Calhau, in the village of Piedade in the east of ​​the island.
We start by climbing the asphalt road on to the lane that passes through the 1854 Ermida de Nossa Senhora de Cima da Rocha (1854 Chapel of Our Lady of the Rock). Then we will lead you through vineyards and past old houses. On this easier part of our trail we will talk about the history of the Pico Island, about its peaceful and warm inhabitants of Pico and their lives.

Then we will continue along the path by the sea over basaltic rock, the uneven surface.It hugs the coast and much of it follows into basaltic rock, commonly known as pahoehoe lava and makes walking more difficult and we go ahead throught Ponta do Castelete, after that we climb a stairway and take a gravel path to the houses of Engrade.

After a bit the trail crosses a nesting area for a colony of terns. Because of this colony, this part of the trail cannot be used from May to July, but there is an alternative path that heads straight on to Manhenha, we turn on the trail which passes by a few bayson the left to the Manhenha Lighthouse.

Near the lighthouse, which forms the easternmost part of the island, will be waiting for us home-cooked lunch and tasting delicious red wine produced in the vineyards of Pico and plenty of quality cheese.

This trail goes through three Nature Reserves: a Special Protection Area, a Site of Community Interest and a Special Protection Area.

After lunch and short brake we will walk a little bit more to Manhenha and its  Novo porto da Manhenha, we show you beautiful Piscina natural da Manhenha, natural lava pool called Baída da Fonte and we end our in Calheta de Nesquim, very nice village with rich whales history.

DON'T FORGET:

Swimming during this trail: this activity is not included in the program of our tours but there is possibility. In case you want to refresh in one of the natural pools, please mention it in your order.
