DESCRIPTION:

This small circular route starts and ends in front of the Church of Calheta do Nesquim, a village with a rich tradition in the history of Azorean whaling. Here, we visit the whaling boat house that was transformed into a local museum of high interest. The trail is covered in a counter-clockwise fashion and features two small diversions, one to the Portinho da Feiteira and another to Pedra Aguda, a natural scenic overlook par excellence.
We begin our walk near the coast and head to the Portinho da Feiteira, a small but very pleasant beach area. After enjoying this magnificent place, we start climbing through a narrow path until reaching the regional road. There, we continue to climb either through pastures or through woods where incense and acacia trees prevail.
After reaching the northernmost point of the trail, we head to the west until we get to Pedra Aguda, the highest point of the route, which offers a dazzling view over the village of Calheta and the whole east section of the island.
Descending back to the Calheta do Nesquim, we go through paths that are identical to the previous ones. Already close to the village, we enter a track between vineyards and pass by a whale observation post (Vigia), heading to the sea. On the coast, we come across another beach area called Baía da Poça and from near the Mourricão Watermill to the church, the final point of this route.

Our trip we end up in a park near the natural lava pool in the Portinho da Feiteira, which is a refreshing spot magnificent hike when the weather is nice, while our team will prepare a delicious lunch for us.
